Secondments

QUANTIFY will be implemented through a coherent set of staff exchanges between the members of the consortium. QUANTIFY qualifies as a partnership with an international dimension: secondments will take place from European Member/Associated States (MS/AS) to Third Countries (the USA), all between academic organizations. The secondments will allow to develop new collaborative works, to share scientific knowledge based on the development of scientific discussions, to exchange information, analytical and numerical models and the access to experimental resources.

Besides the development of new scientific progresses based on the synergistic cooperation planned in QUANTIFY, the other key point of the project is to develop clear mechanisms to transfer the knowledge obtained during the secondments to the sending organization.

We have the first preliminary results on the effect of anisotropy on the plastic localization in light-weight metals! We acknowledge the support of Carlos III University which awarded Oana Cazacu and José A. Rodríguez-Martínez with a reciprocal Chair of Excellence funded by Banco Santander during academic year 2018–2019.

They continue working on modelling the development of necking bands in anisotropic materials subjected to uniaxial tension. In addition, they have started a discussion to address the problem of shear localization in anisotropic materials .

Katarzyna Kowalczyk-Gajewska from the Institute of Fundamental Technological Research (IPPT) has visited Professor Ankit Srivastava, Texas A&M University for two weeks. They started the collaboration on modeling the localized deformation and fracture in low lattice symmetry metal-ceramic nanolaminates within the crystal plasticity framework. They have also started to work on modelling the influence of strain-induced microstructure changes on the yield stress and strain hardening modulus of anisotropic microstructures using crystal plasticity full-field finite element calculations.

In addition, he continued the on-going collaboration with Guadalupe Vadillo on localization and coalescence in porous materials subjected to complex. Moreover, he started to work with José A. Rodríguez-Martínez on the effect on porosity and anisotropy on the formation of adiabatic shear bands.

Nonlinear Solid Mechanics Group

The NSM group, formed by 3 researchers and 4 PhD students, is part of the Department of Continuum Mechanics and Structural Analysis at the University Carlos III of Madrid. Research lines include mechanical characterization at high strain rates, formulation of constitutive theories and analytical models for instabilities in ductile materials, nonlinear vibration in elastic structures, etc. The group has 5 on-going competitive grants, 2 National and 3 European, including an ERC Starting Grant.
